Dance in the context of forced migration and Germany’s asylum system

In 2017, the founding duo of Mobile Dance, Jo Parkes and Barbara Weidner, were part of an expert panel working on recommendations and training for artists working in the field of co-creative dance in accommodation centres for refugees, called into being by the National union of Dance in Schools. The project led to a publication which you can download here.

Their regular format of participatory dance with children JUNCTION has become a model of good practice in Germany and abroad. Co-founders Parkes and Weidner are often invited to speak and lead workshops on the approach. In 2016, Parkes co-founded a working group on dance with refugees with the National Union of Dance in Schools and Parkes and Weidner worked with the Union on the publication „Dance with Refugees“, along with a list of recommendations for artists working in the field.

JUNCTION is funded by ChanceTanz, a project of the „Bundesverband Tanz in Schulen e. V.“ in the programme „Kultur macht stark. Bündnisse für Bildung“ from the BMBF.
